I couldn't be happier with him as artist...take a look at these pages and you'll see why.<BR/><BR/>I love seeing Julian's process because I only very rarely see anything besides the finished pages. I used to ask artists to do thumbnails when I started out, but when I can see someone is a great storyteller I try to let the artist tell the story.<BR/><BR/>It's always a challenge, even with high level talent, to give enough direction so that the artist feels like he or she has enough to work with, but not too much so I'm am telling him or her exactly what to write.<BR/><BR/>It's been fun giving Julian the freedom because the pages always wind up coming out better than I imagined. <BR/><BR/>For instance, yes, I wanted a splash to open the book for effect. But there is no way you would be able to see the wires being used to torture the terrorist and preserve that dramatic angle and level of detail. That was absolutely the right call by Julian - it has the drama of a splash but focuses our attention on the torture...something that will come up in future issues.<BR/><BR/>This was the first page I saw, and what immediately struck me was the detail. You can see the reference I gave Julian...it's scary how accurate it feels. At the same time, the detail doesn't overwhelm you...you never forget what the page is about. It was very easy to trust Julian and give him as much freedom as he wants after this.<BR/><BR/>What you don't see in this post is what a great collaborator Julian is. He is constantly asking me questions that I haven't thought of and thinking of ways to improve the storytelling. I think every suggestion has been 100% right so far...but it means a lot both that an artist respects me enough to ask first, but also that he cares so much about each panel.<BR/><BR/>It was also interesting to read that Julian was inspired by Mazuchelli, Zaffino and Lark. Not only are they, along with Toth, JP Leon etc. some of my favorite artists...they are artists that inspired cover artist Paul Azaceta as well. But I like that both Paul and Azaceta have grown past their influences to create their own styles.<BR/><BR/>I hope you all will check out Unthinkable. Everyone of us - not just Julian and I, but the editors, marketing people, colorist and letterers are treating this book like the epic that I intended it to be. It's got a cool premise, and hopefully good writing...but without question you are witnessing the emergence of "the most promising youn artist in the past 10 years".
